Kovahange Safaris and Guest Farm is a story of restoration. Over the past 50 years, the owners and their family have changed their business model from one where livestock were prioritized and wildlife was pushed to the edge, to almost the opposite. Now, the 32,100 acres reserve is home to a huge diversity of megafauna species that are adapted to the arid woodlands of this region, with cattle only occupying a small portion of their former grazing land. And the primary mechanism for this change has been their ability to attract hunters and tourists from around the world.

The Farm is situated 6 km south of Kalkfeld at the C33 and 280 km northwest of Windhoek, half way between the Etosha National Park and Swakopmund at the Atlantic coast, 1600m (5248 ft) above sea-level. The area is hilly thorn bush savanna with granite hillocks and dry river beds. There are plenty of water holes to view game and also some rock paintings to discover from the ancient cultures dwelling these areas.

The habitat is ideal for a range of browsers and grazers, ranging from more common species like Gemsbok, Red Hartebeest, Plains Zebra and and Blue Wildebeest, to giants like the Angolan Giraffe and the Common Eland. Cheetah & Leopards are currently thriving on the reserve, along with Brown Hyenas and the occasional spotted hyena.

32,100 acres

Preserved in the Otjozondjupa Region of Namibia

Kovahange Safaris & Guest farm has spent a significant amount of time restoring the wildlife on their reserve, both by allowing already present species to rebuild in numbers, and by reintroducing species that hadn't been present for a significant amount of time.

Specific restoration efforts include...

  1. The reintroduction of Angolan Giraffe

  2. Maintaining large herds of species like Hartman's Mountain Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Gemsbok, Springbok, Red Hartebeest, Kudu, Eland and more.

  3. Coexisting alongside predator species like Leopard, Cheetah, Brown Hyena, and Caracal.

The property also grazes a small number of livestock on the property, as a way to diversify the revenue sources from the property, and to fill the niche of Cape Buffalo, a species that is currently extirpated from this region of Namibia, and unlikely to return soon due to to current regulations.
