Situated on the edge of the Kalahari desert, in the Khomas region of Namibia, Jagdfarm Onverwacht (meaning "unexpected" in Dutch) Is a hidden gem of the red desert. Spread across 41,500 acres of habitat (along with a further 50,000 acres of adjoining properties with access to hunt on), it's one of the largest free range hunting areas in the region, and a stronghold for wildlife species like Gemsbok, Red Hartebeest, Springbok, Kudu and warthog.

Being a 4th generation family farm, Kai Uwe and Gerlinde Luhl have been running the farm as a mixed wildlife and cattle farming operation since 2018, working with the natural resources of the landscape to produce food in a sustainable way. This means providing habitat for a range of non game wildlife as well, from Aardvarks and Porcupines to Cheetahs and Leopards.

Kai and Gerlinde's goal over the next few years is to build upon the already abundant game animals present on the properties, and reintroduce further species (such as Impala, Eland, Plains Zebra and more) to improve the prey base for local carnivores, and improve the hunting opportunities for clients. Faunus aim to help them on their journey of restoration, to protect their slice of paradise in the Kalahari.

Preserved in the Khomas Region of Namibia
Jadgfarm Onverwacht is a relatively young hunting operation, only beginning their transition towards incorporating more wildlife into their current stocking in 2019. So far they have done very will protecting the herd of around 1,200 large herbivores that currently exist on the property, along with a small population of native carnivores, including Leopards, Cheetah, Brown Hyaena and jackals.
They've also done a great job of ensuring that their land is interconnected with neighbouring areas, so that animals can easily move in search of food and water resources if need be. All together, Jagdfarm Onverwatch is freely connected to another 80,000+ acres, making it one of the largest intact privately owned landscapes in the region. The mixture of positive land-management practices creates a brilliant foundation for rewilding activities.
